2.71

「度老病死大醫王」者，此通歎醫王法因佛說故也。佛自度三界，思惟老病死已亦能說法，令諸眾生度三界死。一受不退，名大醫王。言「當禮」者，眾生病無量，佛之法藥亦復無量猶如大海，是可歸敬。

"Great King of Physicians who delivers from old age, sickness, and death": this broadly praises the King of Physicians because the Dharma is expounded by the Buddha. The Buddha, having personally crossed beyond the three realms and reflected upon old age, sickness, and death, is also able to expound the Dharma, enabling all sentient beings to cross beyond death in the three realms. Once received, there is no regress—this is called the Great King of Physicians. "Should pay homage": sentient beings' illnesses are measureless, and the Buddha's Dharma medicine is also measureless like the great ocean; it is truly worthy of refuge and reverence.
