From "Thereupon..." down, the minds of the two monks attain purity. The text has three parts: first, the two monks praise Vimalakīrti; second, Upāli readily submits and confirms it; third, the two monks purify their minds and generate the aspiration. First, the two monks praise him. Upāli upheld the precepts through clumsy crossing-over, while Vimalakīrti upheld the precepts through skillful crossing-over; because of the difference between clumsy and skillful, they praise him, saying, "A person of superior wisdom!" That which Upāli's clumsy crossing-over could not reach—the reason he could not explain it was that he only clarified the vinaya upon the Tripiṭaka, and could not use the shared, distinct, and perfect teachings of the Mahāyāna to respond to capacities and make discernment; hence it says, "yet he could not explain it."
