Second, from "Furthermore" below, clarifying that the vinaya and śāstra also state "thus I heard". When the Buddha was in Vārāṇasī, he first spoke the sūtra piṭaka for the five people, which Ānanda compiled after [the Buddha's] demise. When the Buddha was in Rājagṛha, he first spoke the vinaya piṭaka for Sunītha, which Upāli compiled after his demise. When the Buddha was at the Monkey Pond in Vaiśālī, he first spoke the abhidharma piṭaka for the Vṛjiputra, which the five hundred arhats compiled after his demise as the Sūtra of Continuous Liberation. Because the Buddha himself spoke it, it was provisionally named a sūtra; later, when dharmalakṣaṇas were extensively collected, it was named a śāstra. Thus we know that the śāstra piṭaka did not originate only after his demise. If so, since the three piṭakas were all spoken by the Buddha, we know that the śāstra piṭaka also bears the meaning of "thus I heard".
