Third, differing from Lingwei, in two parts: first, question; second, answer, in three parts: first, general refutation; second, "Why is that?" below, the actual refutation. Regarding "king of the path": "king" is in the falling tone (wàng). Regarding "obtaining great and small benefits": when the pure land is manifested, five hundred obtain forbearance and eighty thousand give rise to the [bodhi] mind, which is obtaining the great benefit. When the land becomes defiled again, devas and humans obtain the purity of the Dharma eye, and bhikṣus exhaust their outflows with minds liberated, which is obtaining the small benefit. Clarifying the path according to capacities produces benefits like this; how could this be disparaged and called not the main preaching? Hence it says: "How could disparaging it make it the preface?" Regarding "Furthermore, Jing[ming]... the Buddha's teaching": without the Buddha's seal of confirmation, it could not be called a sūtra; hence one knows that Jingming assists the Buddha's transformation as an auxiliary. Third, "How could..." below, concluding rebuke.
