二、復宗說佛國因果，二：初、懸談義旨，二：初、總示二章對上五意。「五重之中兩意」者，於前釋題五意中，此當初二兩意：初云大士助佛闡揚，化功已畢須還佛所；次意云佛初明佛國因果，大士助宣此義，須歸佛所復宗明義。二、「上開」下，科對佛國以顯復宗。上開宗者，即〈佛國品〉也。《說文》云「開，張也。」《廣雅》云「宗，本也。」初品張佛國之宗本，明淨土之旨義，故曰開宗。此中復宗者，中間諸品別論餘法，為顯佛國。所為既訖，還歸佛所，復本所說佛國之義，故使文節與上符合。

Second, returning to the theme to explain the cause and effect of the Buddha-lands, in two parts: first, an introductory discussion of the doctrinal meaning, in two: first, showing generally how the two sections correspond to the preceding five meanings. Regarding "two meanings among the fivefold": among the five meanings in the earlier explanation of the title, these correspond to the first two meanings: the first says that the Great Being assists the Buddha in propagating the teachings, and once the work of conversion is complete, he must return to the Buddha's place; the second meaning says that the Buddha initially explained the cause and effect of the Buddha-lands, and the Great Being, having assisted in proclaiming this meaning, must return to the Buddha's place to return to the theme and clarify the meaning. Second, from "Above, opening" down, outlining the correspondence with the Buddha-lands to reveal the return to the theme. "Opening the theme above" refers to the "Chapter on the Buddha-Lands." The *Shuowen* says: "*Kai* (開, to open) means to spread out (*zhang*)." The *Guangya* says: "*Zong* (宗, theme) means the fundamental (*ben*)." The initial chapter sets forth the fundamental theme of the Buddha-lands and clarifies the purport of the pure land, hence it is called "opening the theme." The "returning to the theme" here refers to the intervening chapters having treated other dharmas separately in order to reveal the Buddha-lands. What was to be done having been completed, they return to the Buddha's place, returning to the meaning of the Buddha-lands originally explained, thereby making the divisions of the text tally with what came before.
