Second, from "Furthermore, if" downward distinguishes and reveals the meaning of "near" in terms of stages, divided into two: first, in terms of the lower stages, it is not near. Second, from "Vajra-" downward reveals that equal enlightenment is near, which has two parts: first, directly in terms of the Perfect Teaching. Second, from "If" downward, successively in terms of the four teachings. When the vajra-mind bodhisattvas of the previous three teachings look toward the fruit of their own respective teachings, both in terms of Buddha and in terms of principle they may be called "near," yet looking toward the Perfect [Teaching] they are all far. For instance, the vajra-mind of the Separate Teaching has just severed eleven grades [of ignorance], and what has not yet been severed is still much; how could it be called "near"? Comparing them successively across the four teachings in terms of afflictions, the commentary below discusses it itself, hence it says "it can be known."
