Second, specific, divided into two: first, general. This is an explanation in terms of cause and condition. The Da zhidu lun has two explanations; now let us try to reconcile them. The bodhisattva is the true cause and the Buddha is the true fruit; because the dharmas of cause and fruit differ, it says that they have fearlessness and so forth. The bodhisattva is the partial fruit and the Buddha is the ultimate fruit; since the meaning of fruit is identical, it says that they partially attain the Buddha powers and so forth. Thus we know that "true cause" and "partial fruit" are designations of the left and right; although the two explanations differ at will, their single purport is ever the same.
