Second, specific explanation, in three [parts]: First, stating the meaning and dividing the sections. Second, explaining the meaning according to the sections, in five [parts]: First, horizontally regarding the Co-dwelling [Land]. "Fulfilling vows and attaining Buddhahood" is like in the *Lotus Sūtra*. Regarding "measuring their residence," it is the number of retinue residing there: if many, the mansion is large; if few, the mansion is small. Regarding "the quantity of good cultivated" and so forth: if sentient beings cultivate much good, the adornments are superior, like Amitābha; if sentient beings cultivate little good, the adornments are inferior, like Śākyamuni. In the third line, regarding "now clarifying the bodhisattva's subduing" and so forth, subduing is the subsequent line. According to the meaning of this text, the preceding two lines are both expedients for the latter two lines. Thus, we know that teaching, transforming, and subduing are originally for the sake of giving rise to the faculties of Buddha-wisdom. From "fourth, according to the various" onward, explaining the line on giving rise to faculties, its meaning is also like this. Regarding "giving rise to the bodhisattva's faculties": since it says one must rely on the six faculties to give rise to faculties and take the land, one should know that the radiant, silent, immortal bodhisattvas and so forth mentioned below are all in both the pure and defiled Co-dwelling lands, because in the present text they are also for now in the preceding two lands, fully as discussed below. Regarding the "Chapter on Bodhisattva Practice," in that chapter, the Buddha extensively explains the Buddha-land for Ānanda, referring to seventeen items in total: the Buddha's radiance, the bodhisattva's transformed persons, the Buddha's robes, and so forth. Because these four lines are situated in the two lands, it is called "horizontal"; matching them one by one individually is called "vertical."
