Second, the contemplative dhyānas, which has two parts: first, directly explaining the meaning, which has two parts: first, directly explaining the characteristics. Regarding the term "renunciations" (*aṣṭa-vimokṣa*): the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* says, "Turning away from the pure five desires and renouncing this mind of attachment is the first renunciation." Regarding the "two bases of overcoming": Jingxi says that internally having form and externally contemplating few or many is divided into two, three, and four; the two bases of overcoming mean that internally lacking form and externally contemplating few or many is also divided into two. The remaining four bases of overcoming reside in the pure renunciation, which are the four colors among the eight bases of all-inclusiveness (*aṣṭāv abhibhv-āyatanāni* / *kṛtsnāyatanāni*), fully explained as in the *Dhyāna Gate*. Regarding the term "eight bases of all-inclusiveness": there are ten in all; eight reside in the form realm, so the four colors are taken; two reside in the formless realm, so they are not discussed, which are the two bases of all-inclusiveness of empty space and consciousness.
