Second, inquiring whether the medical treatment brings diminution, in two parts: first, a general explanation. Jingxi says: As for "Only sentient beings' illnesses have three differences," and so forth: up to this point, why does it not speak of the three [types such as] conditioned, etc., but only speaks of the three [afflictions such as] view and thought, etc.? The intention is to clarify the characteristics of illness, and these three meanings are evident; hence [terms like] "conditioned" are used temporarily and are not ultimate. To break clinging to existence, attachment to the conditioned is named the unconditioned; breaking attachment is also like this. Furthermore, the unconditioned collaterally involves [the delusions of] dust and sand as well as ignorance, and its substance is mixed and indistinct, so its meaning is not permanent. Furthermore, establishing [the delusions of] view and so on is done in order to correlate below with the three contemplations and the four teachings, so that the text on subduing and consoling becomes convenient.
