二、破除。「不同數人」者，數人所明小乘義耳。四人涅槃，即四聖法界也。「二邊法想」者，荊溪云：前既二解，即有兩種二邊不同。如下文云「若依前解，即我我所為二邊也。若約後解，即約十界生死涅槃為二邊也。即是兩種平等空也。」「九百七十二」者，八十一品，品品各有一十二故。

Second, refuting and eliminating. "Unlike the Abhidharma masters": what the Abhidharma masters clarify is merely the Lesser Vehicle meaning. The nirvāṇa of the four persons is precisely the dharmadhātu of the four noble ones. "The conception of dharmas of the two extremes": Jingxi says, "Since there were two explanations previously, there are two different kinds of the two extremes. As the text below states: 'If relying on the previous explanation, then self and what belongs to the self are the two extremes. If regarding the latter explanation, then regarding the ten realms, saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are the two extremes. That is, they are two kinds of equal emptiness.'" "Nine hundred and seventy-two": because there are eighty-one grades, and each grade has twelve.
