問：處中有淨穢，隨機定說處。時中凡聖殊，何容不別說？答：說處標淨穢，淨穢可定知。說時有短長，聖凡不可准。一會機宜有利有鈍，長時短時如何定准？故處可定說，而時但總言。

Question: Among places there are pure and impure, and the place is definitely stated according to capacity. Among times commoners and sages differ, so why is it permissible not to specify it separately? Answer: In stating the place, pure and impure are marked, and pure and impure can be definitively known. In the time of preaching there are long and short, and sages and commoners cannot be standardized. In a single assembly, capacities may be sharp or dull; how could a long or short time be definitively standardized? Therefore the place can be definitively stated, while the time is only spoken of collectively.
