初、別煩惱釋。怖畏屬思，憂愁屬見。今作法成，位在五品，能伏此惑。指伏為破，故云亦是。取相懺成，在七信位，故滅四住。既見真諦，望中名相，故名取相。無生觀成，位登初住，所除的在根本無明，故知此釋別就大乘明三種懺。

First, explanation in terms of distinct afflictions. Dread belongs to thought [afflictions], and sorrow belongs to view [afflictions]. Now, when ritual performance is perfected, the rank is in the five grades [of disciples], and it can subdue this delusion. Pointing to subduing as destroying, it therefore says 'also is'. When the repentance of obtaining signs is accomplished, it is at the rank of the seven faiths, hence it eradicates the four dwelling places. Having seen the true truth, when viewed relative to the middle it is still called 'marks'; hence it is called 'obtaining signs'. When contemplation of non-arising is accomplished, the rank ascends to the first aboding, and what is eradicated is precisely fundamental ignorance; therefore, we know that this explanation clarifies the three kinds of repentance specifically in terms of the Mahāyāna.
