Second, from "In this manner" onward, praising it as difficult to know. Although retrogressive and progressive investigation takes place within a single thought-moment, its twelve links are fully and distinctly present, and therefore its branches and twigs fill all realms of existence. It is like a great tree that no one can even recognize, how much less cut down? As for the "great tree," the Vibhāṣā says: "The past two links are the roots, the present five links are the trunk, the present three links are the flowers, and the future two links are the fruits." Regarding buhuo ("spreading widely"), the commentary to the Wenxuan says: "buhuo is the appearance of growing abundantly." Both forms, with the speech radical or water radical, are acceptable. The Book of Han says: "buhuo is like bulu, meaning spreading everywhere in uncovered and exposed places."
