Fourth, from "Namah" downward, [the text shows] refuge and reverence toward the Three Jewels. The reason all sūtras begin with refuge and reverence is that the compilers of the sūtras all had refuge and reverence prior to the general narrative. In this region [China], brevity is favored, so translators omitted it. There are also those that preserve it, as at the beginning of the Satyaka-nirgrantha-sūtra, which says: "I take refuge in the Great Ocean of Wisdom, Vairocana Buddha." A note says: "The foreign manuscripts of all sūtras have this line at the head." "The treatises" downward refers to the refuge and reverence of treatise-authors, such as in the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa and the Awakening of Faith. As for the Three Jewels: the Buddha and the Dharma are self-evident; "merit and great eloquence" refers to the bodhisattvas, the Sangha of principle and harmony. Namah means "taking refuge with one's life" here.
