Commentary: Rejoicing in bodhisattvas. First rejoicing in the present, then rejoicing in the past and future. In the first part there are seven stages: first, the stage of initial aspiration; second, the stage of resolute conduct, which is 'across great eons,' etc.; third, the stage of superior intention, which is 'attaining the tolerance of the non-arising [of dharmas]'; fourth, the ground of practicing correct conduct; fifth, the ground of determination; sixth, the stage of determined conduct, which is 'up to non-retrogression,' from the second ground to the ninth ground; seventh, the stage of reaching completion, which is the tenth ground, the completion of causes. The gotra stage and the tathāgata ground are omitted: the gotra is the practice followed previously, and the tathāgata ground is explained later. However, within good there are four kinds each: doing it oneself, teaching others, celebrating and comforting, and rejoicing. Here two are mentioned to indirectly indicate the other two. Praising is celebrating and comforting. Alternatively, there may be four distinct kinds for repentance, etc., and within rejoicing, doing it oneself and teaching others are also subsumed under the two, so they are not explained separately. The past and future are clear.
