Within discipline there are three: the discipline of moral code (saṃvara-śīla), the discipline of gathering wholesome qualities (kuśaladharmasaṃgrāhaka-śīla), and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings (sattvārthakriyā-śīla). “First, the three actions being pure”: this is the intrinsic nature of the three clusters of precepts. “Second, not acting as a cause of affliction for any [being]”: this accords with protecting others. Moreover, the Daśabhūmika-śāstra states that a bodhisattva receives the precepts with the intention to cut off the four floods of sentient beings, which means cutting off the cause of delusion. “Third, closing the evil destinies and opening the good realms”: the Daśabhūmika-śāstra states, “A bodhisattva receives the precepts in order to eliminate the suffering of the evil destinies for sentient beings.” “Fourth, surpassing the śrāvakas and so forth”: this is the most profound, because it is not shared with the two vehicles; because one seeks great bodhi, it does not aim at lesser fruits. “Fifth, merits being fulfilled”: because, with discipline as the basis, concentration and wisdom arise. Therefore the Sutra of the Buddha's Bequeathed Teaching states: “Relying upon this discipline, the various meditative concentrations and the wisdom that eradicates suffering are able to arise.” Furthermore, the first is the discipline of moral code; the second and third are the discipline of benefiting sentient beings; the fourth and fifth are the discipline of gathering wholesome qualities.
