Dhyāna also has three types: first, peaceful-dwelling dhyāna; second, generating dhyāna; third, matter-accomplishing dhyāna. Among these, the first is peaceful-dwelling: gathering all wholesome qualities so that they do not scatter. Dwelling in meditative stabilization, pliancy, and the like is called 'peaceful dwelling'. Generating supernormal powers, all virtues, and the like is called 'generating'. Being able to accomplish activities that benefit oneself and others is called 'matter-accomplishing'. Second, constantly aspiring to liberation refers to the eight liberations. Being able not to abide in the extremes of emptiness and existence is due to inducing liberation. Third, aspiring to attain supernormal powers refers to the six supernormal powers; by manifesting supernormal powers, one causes sentient beings to renounce falsehood and turn to the correct path, accumulating all wholesome roots. These two are generating dhyāna. Fourth, eliminating mental defilements in order to purify the dharmadhātu: mind has two meanings: the mind that can cognize and reflect, and the mind of ultimate reality. In order to purify the dharmadhātu refers to the mind of ultimate reality. Because relying on meditative stabilization can remove the defilements of both minds, this constitutes self-benefit. Fifth, eradicating the root of sentient beings' afflictions constitutes benefiting others. These latter two are matter-accomplishing dhyāna, because they can accomplish matters of benefiting oneself and others. 'Accomplishing matters' is not merely taking matters as cognitive objects; 'matters' means activities and active functions. However, when various treatises speak of transforming the great earth into gold and the like as 'matter-accomplishing', this is tentatively stated from the viewpoint of external beneficial affairs.
