Sūtra: 'At that time, there will be a prince of Vaiśravaṇa named Janiśa, who will manifest the form of a youth and come to that place, asking: "For what reason do you need to call my father?" One should immediately reply: "In order to make offerings to the Three Jewels, I need wealth and material goods; I pray you will bestow them." Then Janiśa, having heard these words, will immediately return to his father's place and address his father, saying: "Now there is a good person who has generated a most sincere mind to make offerings to the Three Jewels, but lacks wealth and material goods; for this reason they invite you." His father will reply: "You may go quickly, and give him one hundred kārṣāpaṇas daily (this is the original Sanskrit term, which properly refers to cowrie shells. Yet according to regional customs it varies: sometimes cowrie shells, sometimes gold, silver, copper, or iron coins. In Magadha at present, one kārṣāpaṇa in common use equals one thousand six hundred cowrie shells, so the total amount may be understood accordingly. If based on the value of goods, it varies from place to place. If a person who upholds the dhāraṇī attains accomplishment, at the time of receiving the goods they will naturally know the amount. One text says: 'give one hundred dīnāras daily', which are gold coins, and so on until the end of one's life, obtaining them every single day. Those who seek in the Western Regions mostly experience divine efficacy, unless they are insincere)." When that dhāraṇī-upholder sees this sign, knowing the matter will succeed, they must stay alone in a clean room, burn incense, and lie down to sleep. One may place an incense box by the bedside. Every morning at dawn, inspect the box and obtain the sought-after goods. Every time goods are obtained, on that very day one must make offerings of incense, flowers, food, and drink to the Three Jewels, and also give to the poor and destitute, expending everything completely without retaining any. Toward all sentient beings, give rise to thoughts of loving-kindness and compassion; do not generate an attitude of anger, deceit, flattery, or harm. If anger arises, the divine efficacy is immediately lost; one should constantly guard one's mind, never letting anger arise.'
