Sūtra: The Buddha told the Good Goddess: "At that time, the elder's son Jalavāhana and his two sons, having provided water and food to the fish in the pool and preached the Dharma to them, all returned home together. Later on, because of a gathering where manifold music and songs were arranged, the elder's son Jalavāhana became drunk with wine and fell asleep. At that time, the ten thousand fish died simultaneously and were reborn in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. They formed this thought: 'Due to what causes and conditions of good karma have we been born into this heaven?' They then said to one another: 'Formerly, in Jambudvīpa, we fell among animals and jointly suffered the bodies of fish. The elder's son Jalavāhana bestowed water and food upon us, and furthermore preached for us the profound Dharma of the twelvefold conditioned arising and dhāraṇīs, and also recited the name of the Tathāgata Ratnaśikhin. It was due to these causes and conditions that we were able to be born in this heaven. Therefore, all of us should now go to that elder's son to repay his kindness and make offerings.'
"Thereupon, the ten thousand devaputras vanished from heaven and arrived in Jambudvīpa at the great king of physicians' dwelling. At that time, the elder's son was sleeping peacefully in an upper storey. Then the ten thousand devaputras placed ten thousand pearl necklaces beside his head, another ten thousand at his feet, another ten thousand on his right side, and another ten thousand on his left side. They rained down māndārava flowers and mahāmāndārava flowers until they piled up to his knees; bright light shone everywhere, and various divine instruments produced exquisite sounds, causing everyone in Jambudvīpa who was asleep to awaken completely. The elder's son Jalavāhana also awoke from sleep. At that time, the ten thousand devaputras, having made their offerings, immediately soared into the air and departed, everywhere raining down wondrous divine lotus flowers throughout the kingdom of King Jalendradhara. These devaputras also went to their original place, the dried-up pool, and rained down many divine flowers; they then vanished from there and returned to the heavenly palaces, freely and spontaneously enjoying the pleasures of the five desires.
"When dawn arrived, King Jalendradhara asked his ministers: 'For what reason did such rare auspicious portents suddenly appear last night, emitting great radiance?' The ministers answered: 'Your Majesty should know: heavenly hosts rained down forty thousand pearl necklaces and divine māndārava flowers piled up to the knees in the house of the elder's son Jalavāhana.' The king said to his ministers: 'Go to the elder's house and summon his son.' Receiving the royal order, the ministers went immediately to his house and proclaimed the king's command, summoning the elder's son. Then the elder's son came before the king. The king said: 'For what reason were such rare auspicious portents manifested last night?' The elder's son said: 'According to my deduction, it must surely be the many fish in that pool who, just as the sūtras explain, were reborn in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three after their lives ended. They came to repay my kindness, and therefore manifested such extraordinary portents.' The king said: 'How do you know this?' Jalavāhana answered: 'Your Majesty may send an emissary together with my two sons to that pool to verify whether it is true or false—whether those ten thousand fish are dead or alive.' Hearing these words, the king immediately sent an emissary and the sons toward that pool. They saw that in the pool there were many māndārava flowers piled into a great heap, and all the fish were dead. Having seen this, they hurried back and explained it in detail to the king. When the king heard this, joy arose in his heart, and he praised it as unprecedented."
