Sūtra: "At that time, within the king's realm, immeasurable hundreds of thousands of sentient beings of various kinds all encountered pestilence and were oppressed by multiple afflictions, to the point of having no joyful thoughts in their minds. Suvarṇaprabhā! At that time the elder's son Jalavāhana, seeing these immeasurable hundreds of thousands of sentient beings suffering various afflictions of illness, gave rise to mahākaruṇā and thought to himself: 'Immeasurable sentient beings are oppressed by these extreme sufferings. Although my father, the elder, is well versed in medical methods and marvelously proficient in the eight arts, curing all diseases and the imbalances of the four great elements, he is already decrepit, aged, exhausted, and feeble; he must rely on a staff before he can take a step, and can no longer go to cities, towns, and villages to rescue them from various afflictions of illness. Now there are immeasurable hundreds of thousands of sentient beings who have all met with grave illness and have no one who can rescue them. I should now go to the place of my great physician father and inquire about the secret methods of medical prescriptions for curing illness. Once I have attained an understanding, I shall go to the places of cities, towns, and villages to cure the various illnesses of all sentient beings, causing them to enjoy peace and happiness through the long night.'"
