The "Chapter on the Dhāraṇī of the Utmost Purified Stages" is distinguished through three gates: first, the purpose of its occurrence; second, explaining the title; third, resolving difficulties. Regarding the purpose of its occurrence: when one wishes to seek bodhi, one must cultivate practice; and cultivation of practice has two aspects, namely severing evil and cultivating goodness. The preceding [chapters on] "Confession" and so forth have already clarified severing evil; next, cultivating goodness is clarified. Within cultivating goodness, there is generating the aspiration and cultivating practice. Generating the aspiration is generating the bodhicitta; that is to say, one must rely upon the mahābodhicitta to practice all good deeds before one can attain the fruit. That which is cultivated is the ten perfections; by means of these ten perfections, one can attain the stages, destroy the ten obstacles to the perfections such as stinginess, obtain the five-part dharmakāya, and accomplish the two supreme fruits. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify this generation of aspiration and cultivation of practice; hence, following the preceding chapter, this chapter arises.
