The Dharma realm is equal and fundamentally devoid of arising and cessation; when deluded, it is saṃsāra, and when awakened, it is nirvāṇa. Although delusion and awakening differ, the principle is constantly equal. The bodhisattva's practice progresses from shallow to deep, hence it is said, 'will before long attain the equality of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa'—this is personal realization. Once personal realization accords with principle, they give rise to function to transform others, exercising a heart of great compassion to set forth skillful expedients, guiding and gathering sentient beings, causing them to cultivate non-intentional practice and develop their fundamental nature. The phrase 'expedients without development' refers to anābhoga practice (effortless practice). Although this principle is fundamentally possessed by everyone, without this effortless practice, neither self-cultivation nor transforming others would be accomplished. Once that bodhisattva arrives at this principle, they realize that all sentient beings are like illusions and apparitions; without laboring their attention, they naturally depart far from all marks of inner and outer realms. There is only the one true mind and nothing else seen; this is entering the place of signlessness. The place of signlessness is the stage of the first abidance where ignorance is broken and the Dharma nature is revealed, sequentially entering the practices, dedications, and grounds. 'From ground to ground' means from the first bhūmi to the tenth bhūmi.
