The essence of mind is like the ocean, the eight consciousnesses are like flowing water, the seventh consciousness is like a torrent, and the six consciousnesses are like waves. Now, depending on the flowing movement of the eighth consciousness, waves of the revolving consciousnesses such as the eye-[consciousness] can arise. As with the eye-consciousness, the remaining five sense faculties, down to a single atom or a single hair-pore, all arise together with consciousness, leaving nothing unperceived. That 'their arising according to their respective realms is also like this' means that external realms of dust also arise gradually together with consciousness; that the myriad dharmas are consciousness-only is seen from this. However, the arising of consciousness has both sudden and gradual [aspects]: 'like a bright mirror manifesting images of various colors' illustrates sudden arising; 'just as a fierce wind blows upon the water of the great ocean' illustrates gradual arising. A mirror's manifestation of images has no before or after, whereas when the wind blows upon ocean water, the preceding wave rises and the succeeding wave follows.
