此明外塵境界非心本具，但隨業轉生。六識分別五識所取外塵，故云「識所識」也。意根對法塵而起意識，亦復然矣。五識隨五塵而顯現，豈定有次第而生耶？

This clarifies that the realms of external sensory dust are not fundamentally possessed by the mind, but merely evolve and arise in accordance with karma. The sixth consciousness discriminates the external dust grasped by the five consciousnesses; hence it says "the cognizing of what is cognized." The mental faculty (manas) facing the dust of dharmas gives rise to mental consciousness, which is also like this. The five consciousnesses manifest in accordance with the five dusts—how could they possibly arise in a fixed sequence?
