此喻正顯言說文字無實之義。如來隨機說法，如畫師之隨形圖像，然圖像雖由彩色筆素而成，其實則非彩色筆素，但為取悅眾情，假之以繪諸像也。

This metaphor precisely reveals the meaning that spoken words and written characters have no reality. The Tathāgata expounds the Dharma according with capacities, just as a painter depicts images according with forms. Yet although an image is accomplished through colors, brush, and silk, in reality it is neither colors, brush, nor silk; it merely borrows them to paint various images in order to please the sentiments of the masses.
