It was said above that the realm of the Dharma-body is the ultimate stage of the Tathāgata. If a practitioner wishes to reach this stage, without wisdom they cannot advance; therefore, establishing the marks of wisdom serves as the basis upon which students rely and abide. If they do not exert effort to advance, how could it be accomplished? Therefore he admonishes and exhorts: "They should diligently cultivate and study the three marks of noble knowledge above." Furthermore, fearing that Mahāmati had not yet grasped the three marks, he again inquires into and explains them. However, these three marks cannot be practiced by the two vehicles, so they are compared to a lame donkey. The "supreme sons" refers to bodhisattvas of the eighth stage. Because it is not shared with the two vehicles, it says "able to abandon." This is truly because although this sūtra is Mahāyāna, it also encompasses the common teaching. "Cultivate and produce" means cultivating and producing noble knowledge. "The mark of non-existence" means the absence of the marks of the two vehicles and tīrthikas. "The mark of the domain of their own vows" means the Buddhas establishing vows from the very beginning to cultivate. "The mark of the culmination of noble knowledge" means the mark of wisdom by which one self-realizes the Middle Way. The Middle Way is free from the marks of the two extremes of emptiness and existence, hence it says "not clinging to any." The "samādhi-body" is the reward body (sambhogakāya). "The stages of all Buddhas" and so forth means that the transformation body (nirmāṇakāya) pervades all Buddha-lands, manifesting progressive cultivation and proceeding toward the fruit; hence it says "practicing to produce." The concluding exhortation to fellow practitioners can be understood.
