The views of the tīrthikas do not exceed two kinds: The first is the conceptualization of non-existence, seeing that all dharmas are exhausted along with their causes and that there are no further causes, just as a hare has no horns, so all dharmas are also like this; this is the view of annihilation. The second is the conceptualization of existence, seeing that the great elements arise depending upon subtle dust (atoms). 'Great elements' refers to the four great elements. *Guṇa* is translated as 'dependence' (or quality). *Dravya* is translated as 'dust' (or substance). Clinging arbitrarily to distinctions in the shapes, measures, and locations of things such as dust, they form the conception that an ox has horns; this is the view of permanence.
