From 'whatever [bodhisattva-mahāsattvas] distinguish' onward, it further explains the meaning of receiving empowerment and introduces the comparison that follows. It means that whenever bodhisattvas speak with eloquence on dharmas such as samādhi, it is entirely due to abiding in the Buddha's supernatural power; this uses the ordinary to contrast with the noble, saying that if a bodhisattva were apart from supernatural power, he could not say anything—how much less an ordinary person! If supernatural power is attained, even insentient things are functional; how could sentient beings not thereby be freed from suffering? Stating that ordinary persons do not abide in supernatural power is merely using the noble to eclipse the ordinary. Moreover, saying 'The Tathāgata possesses such supernatural power' means that within the Tathāgata's great stillness of concentration, being quiescent yet always illumining, in accord with true nature he sets forth myriad means without obstruction—how could there be any deliberate intention in his midst!
