The Buddha responds that there are words without svabhāva, meaning that causes and conditions originally have no svabhāva, yet there is no harm in indicating them with words; how must words constitute a svabhāva! Just as in the world people presently speak of 'tortoise's hair,' 'hare's horns,' and 'the child of a barren woman,' which originally have no svabhāva and yet have words, they are neither svabhāva nor non-svabhāva. Saying 'neither svabhāva' means they are not real; saying 'nor non-svabhāva' means there is no obstacle to the presence of words. Hence it is said: 'merely words.' Concluding with the rebuke 'your proposition is ruined' means the proposition that both have svabhāva is ruined.
