佛說離四句本令歸正，故語大慧：未來世菩薩當以離四句相問彼世人，意示入道之門。彼無智人不達此意，乃答云此非正論。謂色等者，言約陰入界等諸法上而分常無常、異不異等四句也。如是涅槃諸行者，行即能顯涅槃之行，能相所相、能依所依、能造所造、能見所見。塵及微塵，謂泥團微塵也。修與修者，即人法也。如是比展轉相者，言上相對二法。如是等下，《入楞伽》云：「如是不可記事次第而問，世尊說此當止記答，愚夫無智，非所能知。佛欲令其離驚怖處，不為記說。」

The Buddha's teaching on detachment from the catuṣkoṭi was originally intended to bring [beings] back to correctness. Therefore, he told Mahāmati: 'Bodhisattvas in future ages should question worldly people through the characteristics of detachment from the catuṣkoṭi, with the intent of revealing to them the gate of entering the Way.' Those unintelligent people do not grasp this intent, and thus respond: 'This is not an orthodox treatise.' In saying 'matter and so forth', it means that on the basis of all dharmas—such as the skandhas, āyatanas, and dhātus—they differentiate the catuṣkoṭi such as permanence and impermanence, identity and difference, and so forth. In 'likewise nirvāṇa and the saṃskāras', the saṃskāras are the practices that can reveal nirvāṇa; [and similarly there are] that which characterizes and that which is characterized, that which supports and that which is supported, that which creates and that which is created, and that which sees and that which is seen. 'Dust and subtle dust' refers to clods of earth and subtle dust particles. 'Cultivation and the cultivator' refers to the dharma and the person. 'Mutually dependent characteristics of this kind' refers to the two correlative dharmas described above. Regarding 'such questions and so forth', the *Entering into Laṅkā* says: 'When unanswerable matters are thus asked in sequence, the World-Honoured One taught that these should be answered by setting them aside without declaring an answer. Fools lack wisdom; it is not within their capacity to know. Because the Buddha wishes to free them from terrifying positions, he does not declare an answer to them.'
