Concerning these four kinds of declarations: 'direct' means an immediate answer, which means answering in accordance with the question; 'cross-examination' is also called counter-interrogation, which means questioning back regarding what was asked; 'analytic' means answering with detailed discernment; and 'setting aside' means laying it aside without answering. To overcome the tīrthikas, setting aside is mostly used. 'Arising from existence and nonexistence' means that the Sāṃkhyas assert existence, while the Vaiśeṣikas assert nonexistence; *Sengqie* is Sāṃkhya, and *Pishe* is Vaiśeṣika. Dharmas such as these are all subsumed under inexpressible theses. Those tīrthikas' conceptions do not go beyond existence and nonexistence, hence it says 'thus do they reveal them'. When examined with samyagjñāna, in seeking their nature and characteristics, neither can be found, how much less so verbal expressions?
