Above it was said, "if one awakens, one attains liberation"; therefore he further instructs him in the path of awakening and knowing. As for the meaning of the two kinds of awakening: speaking broadly at first, they might seem to differ as real and false; however, based on the concluding text stating "the bodhisattva accomplishes," both are contemplations of the great being, differing as ultimate and conventional. Observational awakening is the awakening of ultimate truth; establishing awakening is the awakening of conventional truth. This is truly because the bodhisattva, in contemplating the ultimate, does not abandon the conventional, and in illuminating the conventional, does not contravene the ultimate. "If one awakens to the nature and characteristics of self-nature...": this means contemplating the self-nature of all dharmas; this nature is originally free from characteristics and cannot be discriminated or selected through the four propositions such as identity and difference; hence it says "nothing can be obtained."
