The dhyāna of the foolish is said to be practiced by the two vehicles and tīrthikas because, in contemplating the nature of the selflessness of persons, they cannot comprehend that the svalakṣaṇa and sāmānyalakṣaṇa appearing from the measure of their own minds are empty by nature; they are lumped together and designated as 'the foolish.' 'Interconnected bones' refers to the contemplation practiced in the Hīnayāna of the chain of bones of one's own and others' bodies as being characterized by impermanence, suffering, and impurity; this contemplation is foremost as an antidote to attachment. 'Not viewing them as different from these characteristics' means that the characteristics seen in meditation are not different from the contemplation; this is the sign of the contemplation's completion. Although they gradually advance step by step to the concentration of non-conception, they do not leave characteristics behind; this is called the dhyāna of the foolish.
