Meaning is revealed by words. If one generates views by following words, one will not only lose the meaning but also be deluded about the names. Therefore, by properly leaving behind the marks of vikalpa and marks of discursive speech, it is only through personal realization and verification that one is called skilled in meaning. Thus, here the path of cultivation and verification is clarified: namely, abiding alone in a quiet place with the wisdom of hearing, contemplation, and practice, contemplating and practicing according to the names and meanings of tathatā, dharmadhātu, and so forth as heard, relying on the wisdom of self-realization to advance toward nirvāṇa, transforming the previously mentioned vāsanā of vikalpa, returning to the realm of self-realization, and practicing the progressive marks of the stages—this is called skill in meaning.
