Owing to the previous entry through awakening, one enters the first stage; gradually advancing, as the stage deepens and virtues become manifest, one is not shaken by the erroneous views of tīrthikas, reaching the eighth stage, the Immovable. Here one attains the ten joyful gates of samādhi and is sustained by the samādhi-power of the Buddhas. 'Awakening' refers to the Buddhas. One is then able to contemplate the dharmas of all Buddhas and the power of one's fundamental vows: unlike the Hīnayāna, one does not cling to the joy of samādhi and does not abide in the reality-limit, but gives rise to transformation to benefit beings. Obtaining self-realized knowledge, how could it be the same as the practice of ordinary people and Hīnayānists? Attaining 'the path of the ten noble lineages' refers to the noble lineages of the ten stages. The ten stages are all noble (ārya); the addition of the word 'virtuous' (bhadra) is spoken in contrast to the ultimate stage. Regarding 'the mind-made [body] of body and knowledge', it means that from the ten stages up to the Buddha stage, the body is the Dharmakāya, knowledge is the Sambhogakāya, and the mind-made body is the Nirmāṇakāya. Having attained the three bodies, one departs from the causal practices of samādhi. Therefore, the admonition says: those who wish for superior progress to the Tathāgata stage should purify the names of the tathāgatagarbha and the storehouse consciousness. The tathāgatagarbha itself fundamentally has nothing to be purified; it is merely purifying its defilements. That the storehouse consciousness is spoken of as a name is because, through delusion regarding the tathāgatagarbha, it transforms into deluded consciousness; having no separate substance, it has only a name. If the name of the storehouse consciousness is absent, then deluded consciousness is transformed into the tathāgatagarbha.
