Mahāmati addressed the Buddha: "World-Honoured One, how is it that deluded conceptualization arises in foolish people, and not in the noble and virtuous ones?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Foolish people cling to worldly conventional names and characteristics, and their minds scatter and drift along with them. Having scattered and drifted, falling into views of self and what belongs to self under various shapes and appearances, they desire and grasp at exquisite forms. Having grasped, they are obscured and obstructed by ignorance, and thus give rise to defiled attachment. Having become attached, they accumulate karma born of greed, anger, and delusion. Having accumulated it, they bind themselves through deluded conceptualization, like a silkworm making a cocoon, falling into the wilderness of the various destinies in the ocean of birth and death, like a well-pulley. Because of their folly, they are unable to know that the nature of illusions, mirages, and the moon in the water is free from self and what belongs to self, and they give rise to all manner of unreal, deluded conceptualizations. Free from characteristic and characterized, as well as arising, abiding, and ceasing, [these appearances] arise from the deluded conceptualization of one's own mind, and are not produced by Īśvara, time, atoms, or Pradhāna. Foolish ordinary people fall and drift in the flow of names and characteristics."
