The Ganges sands are insentient things of the worldly realm: although trodden upon by fish, turtles, humans, beasts, and the like, they do not produce thoughts of distress. This serves as an analogy for the Tathāgata's noble wisdom and sovereign supernatural power: experiencing the distress caused by externalists, humans, and beasts, he produces no thoughts or conceptualizations. This is because by the power of his original vows he benefits and pacifies sentient beings, without conceptual distinctions of love or hate. Śiśumāra is translated as 'child-killing fish' (crocodile).
