That the seven consciousnesses do not undergo transmigration carries forward the above meaning of being without outflows, distinguishing them from the six consciousnesses and the eighth consciousness. These consciousnesses of the two vehicles have already severed [delusions of] view and thought; they do not transmigrate through the three realms and do not experience the suffering and pleasure of birth and death; thus they differ from the six consciousnesses. They are not the cause of nirvāṇa; thus they differ from the eighth consciousness, because the eighth consciousness, receiving perfuming, is able to constitute the cause of nirvāṇa. The tathāgatagarbha directly explains the eighth consciousness: because it can contain and store good and evil, it transmigrates through birth and death in accord with conditions, [along with] the causes and effects of suffering and pleasure. The four stages of abiding are branch-and-tip ignorance. The abiding stage of ignorance is fundamental ignorance. Dazed and intoxicated by this ignorance, they accordingly undergo the two kinds of birth and death. The foolish and ignorant are perfumed in mind by vikalpa; unable to fully understand this, they give rise to momentary views.
