"Mahāmati, what is the awakening of establishing through grasping and obsessively clinging to the characteristics of discrimination? It means grasping the characteristics of discrimination and obsessively clinging to the four great elements of solidity, moisture, warmth, and motion as unreal, discriminative characteristics; and obsessively clinging to thesis, reason, characteristics, and examples, establishing what is unreal—this is called the awakening of establishing through grasping and obsessively clinging to the characteristics of discrimination. These are called the characteristics of the two kinds of awakening. If a bodhisattva-mahāsattva accomplishes these two characteristics of awakening and the characteristics of the selflessness of persons and dharmas, thoroughly understands skillful means and the awakening of nonexistence, contemplates the stages of practice, attains the first stage, enters one hundred samādhis, attains distinct samādhis, sees one hundred Buddhas and one hundred bodhisattvas, knows the events of one hundred kalpas past and future, illuminates one hundred Buddha lands with light, knows the characteristics of ever higher stages, possesses superior great vows, is sovereign in supernormal powers, receives the abhiṣeka of the Dharma Cloud, and will attain the stage of the Tathāgata's self-realization; and if they concentrate their mind well on the ten inexhaustible phrases, mature sentient beings, possess adornments of various transformations and radiances, and attain the correct absorption in the bliss of the arya's self-realization samādhi."
