This analogy of painted images compares the evil habits of the tīrthikas to giving rise to views that ruin themselves and ruin others. When it speaks of 'other discourses that are free from existence, nonexistence, and non-arising', it refers to the correct teaching. The discourse on non-arising in the correct teaching is free from the views of existence and nonexistence; yet they, conversely, assimilate this to their own view and likewise speak of it as non-existent. 'Superior seekers' refers to those who seek the superior Dharma, who ought to abandon this view. Since those tīrthikas will fall into the evil destinies on account of their false views, how could one not be terrified?
