4.31

"Mahāmati, those deluded people speak like this: 'The meaning is like the speech; meaning and speech are not different.' Why is this? Because meaning has no body, outside of speech there is no further meaning, and it rests solely in speech. Mahāmati, their wisdom is miserably burnt; they do not know the svabhāva of speech, and they do not know that speech arises and ceases, whereas meaning neither arises nor ceases. Mahāmati, all speech falls into letters, while meaning does not fall [into them], because it is free from nature and non-nature, has no taking of birth, and has no body. Mahāmati, the Tathāgata does not teach dharmas that fall into letters, because the existence or nonexistence of letters is unobtainable—except for that which does not fall into letters."
