Some non-Buddhists say that because they cultivate contemplations such as impermanence, they do not yearn for external objects, and because the contemplation is perfected, they attain concentration. The various phenomena of form, mind, and mental factors do not appear before them, nor do they cognize or contemplate objects of the three times, because the karmic causes of ignorance and craving have been exhausted. It is like an oil lamp whose oil is exhausted and no longer gives light, like a seed that has rotted and no longer sprouts, like a fire extinguished when fuel is gone and burns no more. Because grasper and grasped do not arise, false discrimination does not occur, and they form the notion of nirvāṇa regarding this, [whether] with remainder or without remainder. This is the nirvāṇa of the śrāvakas. Because they attain nirvāṇa only through seeing the destruction of the birth and death of fragmented lifespans, they are also the same as non-Buddhists.
