The cauldron is an analogy for the defiled mind; the boiling water is an analogy for the afflictions of the three poisons—sensory desire, ill will, and delusion—boiling up within the defiled mind. Covering the top with a cloth is an analogy for ordinary beings being obscured and blinded by the five hindrances, so that in the end they cannot see the Way. The five hindrances refer to: first, sensory desire; second, ill will; third, delusion; fourth, restlessness and remorse; and fifth, sloth and torpor. All of these cover and obscure.
