Now, the ultimate sage possesses perfect penetration, and the Way is nowhere absent; how could he make discriminations regarding worldly conventions? Furthermore, to benefit sentient beings with great compassion, adapting to faculties to awaken living beings, he stated that the nobility of kings and marquises cannot be relied upon, and treasures of gold and brocade are not worth craving; hence he raised the metaphors of dust in a sunbeam and rubble and tiles to restrain their desiring minds. Moreover, with the gates of expedient means, the unsurpassed vehicle, the names of the Buddha-way and dhyāna, and the categories of nirvāṇa and equality, one may follow them yet must not become bogged down in them; one may practice them yet must not lose one's direction. Thus he broadly employed metaphors of rejecting and accepting to guard against the obstruction of grasping and attachment. Scholars who hear the Way can sound the silence and awaken to it.
