The *Nirvāṇa Sūtra* says: "*I-cchan* means faith; *tika* means lacking. One whose faith is incomplete is called an *icchantika*. Alternatively, it means burning one's roots of goodness; this refers to sentient beings who have severed their roots of goodness." *Mleccha* is translated here as "people who delight in defilement and impurity"; such people have no understanding whatsoever of the Buddha-Dharma, which is to say, they hold extreme and deviant, incorrect views. Due to incorrect views, they slander the true Dharma, and at death fall into borderlands, never knowing the Buddha. *Duo* (墮) means to destroy. Ānanda's intent in requesting is that, having himself attained correct practice and recognized the limit of reality, he will depart from deviant views and perhaps achieve Buddhahood, while also hoping in turn to cause sentient beings devoid of the root of faith who have severed goodness to destroy their deviant views and recognize the Buddha's true Dharma. Benefiting oneself and benefiting others is what constitutes a proper request.
