There are seven arrogances here: relying on oneself to look down on others, with self-elevation as its nature, is called arrogance (māna); weighing self and other and comparing equal virtues is merely called pride (māna); claiming oneself superior to one's equals is called excessive arrogance (atimāna); claiming oneself superior to those who are superior is called arrogance beyond arrogance (mānātimāna); claiming to have attained what has not been attained is called arrogance of overestimation (adhimāna); although knowing oneself to be inferior, looking back and admiring oneself is called arrogance of inferiority (ūnamāna); slandering and destroying scriptures and images is deviant arrogance (mithyāmāna). These seven arrogances arise because, in meditative absorption, superior views suddenly arise without the awareness of correct wisdom.
