《四分》云：若病重者，應扶輿來僧中。若慮增動，僧就病者所，圍繞作法。若病者多，不能集者，僧出界外作羯磨。以更無方便，得別眾故。

The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: 'If one is gravely ill, he should be supported or carried into the saṃgha. If it is feared that this would aggravate the ailment, the saṃgha goes to the sick person's place and surrounds him to perform the rite. If there are many sick persons who cannot assemble, the saṃgha goes outside the boundary to perform the karman, because there is no other expedient and a separate saṃgha would result.'
