Question: After granting chanda, if one does not come after the affair has concluded, does one commit the offense of forming a separate saṃgha? Answer: One does not commit an offense. Because with harmonious intent one reached the saṃgha, yet did not take the circumstance of the chanda as the matter of the karman. The text states: 'If the affair ceases, he should go; if he does not go, deal with him according to the Dharma.' It does not say that the rite is invalidated. If that is so, then when taking leave of days and leaving the boundary, if the affair ceases, does the rite lapse? Answer: In the text on taking leave of days, because the specific affair is recited, when the prior circumstance is discontinued, the rite lapses; in this rite of receiving chanda, because the specific affair is not recited, when the circumstance lapses, the chanda remains valid.
