Next, communal rites are explained; there are three kinds: First, single-motion (jñapti-mātra). The matter may be light or minor, or frequently practiced, or strictly regulated; once it is announced to the saṃgha, the ritual transaction is accomplished. Second, motion with one resolution (jñapti-dvitīya). Because the matter involves complex concerns, in principle it must be reconciled and agreed upon. One motion specifies the matter and announces it, and one karman assesses whether it is approved or not, whereupon the preceding business is settled. Including the motion and the karman, it is therefore called jñapti-dvitīya. Third, motion with three resolutions (jñapti-caturtha). Upasampadā, confessing grave offenses, disciplinary suspension, reprimand and admonition—these matters pertain to serious or light concerns, and views may differ. Unless there is one motion to announce it and three procedures to deliberate and approve, how could it be settled? Because three karmans are added to the single motion preceding them, it is called jñapti-caturtha. If calculated according to conditions and forms, they total one hundred and thirty-four karmans. It is so stated in brief; if expanded further, there are still more. Single-motion has thirty-nine; jñapti-dvitīya has fifty-seven; jñapti-caturtha has thirty-eight. If combined with the previous two [categories of mental and face-to-face rites], there are one hundred and eighty-four rites. Question: One hears of one hundred and one karmans; why is the list here different? Answer: That is merely a general index, not an absolute fixed number; one can also cite the *Daśādhyāya-vinaya*, which definitively has one hundred and one.
